Individually Guided Retreats 2008

What are Individually Guided retreats?

In a recent article about her retreat at Loyola Hall, a journalist recalled how she had arrived empty, exhausted and emotionally strung out. Yet within days her jostling thoughts had given way to a spacious emptiness that seemed, quite simply, heavenly. Saint Ignatius (whose Spiritual Exercises form the basis of the retreats offered at Loyola Hall)firmly believed that God could be found in all things, in every aspect of human life. Though situated less than a mile from junction 7 on the M62 motorway, Loyola Hall offers people space and time to muse and reflect and to explore where God is to be found in their lives. Because God deals with each individual in a unique way, we offer a large number of Individually Guided retreats of different lengths, where the retreatant has the opportunity to talk daily with an experienced guide. Each retreat offers space and time to reflect on the past, to ponder and assess the present, to listen to the desires of the heart and to talk with God in prayer about the way forward. Even the garden breathes a helpful atmosphere, inviting the wanderer to be still, to think and to pray.

The Supervision of Spiritual Directors

17th - 21st November 2008

Supervision is the principle way in which spiritual directors develop and grow in this ministry. The course will focus on spiritual accompaniment in the Ignatian tradition and offer a model of supervision arising out of the experience of that tradition. It is intended for people who have experience in accompanying others and are thinking about seeking supervision. Those already supervising others may find it helpful.

It is intended to be a practical course and will invite participants to share and reflect upon their own experience of accompaniment and supervision.

Ruth Holgate, director of the Glasgow Ignatian Spirituality Centre, will lead the course.

For further information contact the Loyola Hall director Ian Tomlinson SJ (0151 426 4137)

Psychology and Ignatian Spirituality

21st - 23rd November 2008

Ignatius would never have described himself as a psychologist but Ignatian spirituality shows remarkable insights into the human mind and soul. This course will consider human and spiritual growth from a psychological perspective, and will use some insights drawn from 'Positive Psychology'. This movement within contemporary psychology is concerned with human thriving - what makes life worth living and what promotes well-being - and recent psychological research into this understudied area has produced some intriguing findings relevant to Christians.

Dr Roger Dawson SJ, is a chartered clinical psychologist and a Jesuit priest. he is currently Assistant Chaplain at Oxford University.
